“Bloats will explode in a shower of acidic goop when they die. Keep your distance when taking them down.”
“Bloat, not too hard to kill, but its bile is poisonous, so make sure you keep out of range.” —Loading screen tips.
The Bloat is a large specimen that makes its appearance in the first wave of all games. It is a slow lumbering specimen with a short ranged corrosive vomit attack and a medium damage melee attack. On higher difficulties its vomit attack can be fatal to unaware and unarmoured players. There is a greylisted Bloats only mutator packaged with the game called 'Bloat-ed'.

Biology[edit]
Appearance[edit]
The Bloat appears to be an obese, naked, tall, and bald creature with jaundice. The creature has multiple fat folds, and what appears to be a rash on its right stomach and both thighs. This creature is also wielding a butcher cleaver in its left hand. The Bloat also appears to have both nipples pierced.
Events[edit]
For the Twisted Christmas update, he was re-skinned as Santa Claus , similar to the Patriarch. This skin depicts a very obese Santa Claus, with his girth tearing the fabric of his red suit. He is also wielding a cleaver.
For the Summer Sideshow update he was re-skinned as Pukey the Clown. This skin depicts an old-fashion clown, complete with makeup, silly hat, and frilled collar and frilled wrist-cuffs. The front of the costume is coated in vomit. Unlike both other skins of the Bloat, this one is armed with a medieval mace instead of a butcher cleaver.
For the Hillbilly Horror update he was re-skinned as Mamma Bessie, a large woman who wore a blue floral patterned blouse. Unlike the original bloat and Pukey the clown, Mamma Bessie wields a meat tenderizer.
Behavior[edit]
The behavior of the Bloat is similar to that of the Siren, in that it slowly approaches the target character. When it is in attacking range, it vomits in the direction of the player. If it has recently vomited, it will attack a player in melee range with its cleaver. If the Bloat is decapitated, it will attempt to waddle towards a player and attack them with its cleaver. When alone he can be heard muttering to himself with a hoarse voice, muttering phrases such as "What is that smell"?

Historic data[edit]

The Bloat in the Killing Floor mod is very similar to the one in the retail version, with the primary difference being its appearance. It is overweight, and noticeably so, but not grotesquely obese like its retail counterpart. It is also more mutilated in the mod, with exposed intestines and blood covering its mouth and hands.
Background[edit]
The Bloat is one of the more disturbing specimens created by Horzine, mainly because not all Bloats were clones. Horzine experimented with drugs to maintain a soldiers physical body, designed to combat against fatigue, muscle loss, even old age. Advertising them as weight loss supplements, Horzine recruited hundreds of obese men, and experimented on them.
The drugs were a complete failure. The test subjects grew even more obese, and their immune systems were genetically enhanced into an overdrive, making all of the subjects body fluids a toxic acid. But because the overall body chemistry and structure of the Bloats remained the same (i.e. human) their bodies violently rejected the toxin, making them vomit whenever the acid reached a critical level. Furthermore, significant damage to their bodies resulted in a violent rupturing of the cells in the Bloat, causing it to explode in a spray of acid.
Clamley, watching the experiments with interest, ordered the projects continue. This makes the Bloat one of the few specimens not specifically designed as a super soldier, and the only specimen not made by cloning.
Extermination[edit]
The Bloat can have a disproportionately large amount of total health compared to that of its head. Thus in the vast majority of situations it is easiest to go for its head for a quick kill. Explosives can be ineffective if not aimed towards its head or upper torso. A Flamethrower can also be effective against a Bloat thanks to its 50% weakness to it's primary damage, however, on high difficulties with lots of players, this can still take comparably long amount of time.
When the Bloat dies it will leave behind a corrosive puddle that damages players, unless it dies as the result of bleed out from being decapitated. During this bleed out time, the Bloat is also incapable of vomiting.
Since it has a very large body hitpoint, and so small head health; decapitating him grants a notable amount of damage point toward the perk leveling progress. Especially damage point requiring perks, should take the advantage of Bloats huge body hitpoint and aim for decapitating him in sight with perk related weapons. Alternatively playing as a bile resistant perk such as Field Medic or Berserker and using an off-perk weapon to decapitate the Bloat helps toward damage point progress of other perks.
