The Husk

The Husk is one of the few specimens with a ranged attack. The others being the Siren, the Patriarch, and to a much lesser extent, the Bloat. It can make its first appearance on the second wave, regardless of game length. Its main attack is a projectile fireball, with a speed similar to that of the L.A.Ws own rocket, that inflicts fire based damage with after burn. Its melee attack, where it smacks the player with its gun, deals the same damage as the Gorefast. They are characterised by their resemblance to the Fleshpound, immunity to fire, and their slightly burnt exterior.

There is a unofficial whitelisted Husks-only mutator called Hellfire. The Husks it spawns however, have modified stats to prevent Firebug impunity.

Biology

Appearance

The Husk has many similarities to the Fleshpound in its appearance and, thanks to the yellow glow on its weapon, can easily be mistaken for them at a distance. Its skin is a reddish-brown colour and appears slightly burnt. There are several metal protrusions from its body, including several spiked rings in their left arms and lower legs, some form of gas mask in place over their mouth and their weapon and fuel pack (which is nailed to their shoulders). It also appears to be wearing a pair of jeans which have lost their colour, their lower half, and have become a pair of brown shorts. He also wears a belt around his waist to keep his shorts up.

Behaviour

A Husks will attempt to fire upon a player as soon as it sees them, because of this a fireball hitting a nearby wall is usually the first sign off their arrival. Though their shots are normally way off the mark (often missing by several meters) they occasionally make a very good prediction as to where you are going to move, and you can end up running into the fireball. They will steadily walk towards the player between shots and, when within range, will attempt to hit them with its gun. Unlike other specimens it is relatively unaffected by effects of being set on fire.

Historic data

Killing Floor mod 'KF' logo.png This section is related to the Husk as it appeared in the Killing Floor mod.

While the husk didn't appear in the in the mod it bears resemblance to a specimen from the mod found in the source files that never made it into the game; a modified version of a Fleshpound which featured a machine gun on one arm, dubbed the Fleshpound Chain-gunner. This chaingunner had a similar setup of metal apparatus as the Husk, but used the same base mesh of the Fleshpound from the mod. The behaviour patterns and animations on it were incomplete; when readying its weapon it would just snap into place and glide on its path towards its target, not stopping. Pushing the player along the ground much like the Fleshpound, as opposed to what you would expect of a ranged foe; to stop moving whilst firing.

Extermination

High level Firebugs have nothing to fear from Husks at range, thanks to their resistance to fire. The Firebug's primary weapon, the Flamethrower, is poorly suited to killing Husks due to their resistance to fire, but doing so could earn you the achievement 'Flaming Hell, That Was Close'. Firebugs aren't totally immune to damage from Husks however, as their melee attacks can still cause them damage.

A Husks overall health is exactly double that of the Siren and similar tactics can be used to defeat it, but with different precautions; dodging the fireballs is viable strategy without distractions. The Husk is also quite awkward to decapitate, much like the siren, especially with weaker weapons, but headshots are still a viable strategy for removal, especially for Sharpshooters.

Almost any tier 3 weapon makes short work of a Husk, but the fastest method for killing them (in the hands of a skilled Sharpshooter) is using the M14EBR and aiming for the head. At lower levels, a Support specialist with a Shotgun can still bring it down relatively easy, without spending too much ammo.

Grenade launchers, stacked Grenades and Pipe bombs are also an incredibly quick way to take down a Husk (especially if you are playing Demolitions or stack Grenades as a Support specialist), but try to kill it with a few specimens around, to make sure you're not spending a huge amount on explosives just to kill a relatively easy foe.

Health charts

Total health

The base hit points of the Husk is 600; its total health on normal with one player, and for every additional player 60 hit points is added. This figure is then multiplied by 0.5 on beginner, 1 on normal, 1.35 on hard, 1.55 for suicidal, and 1.75 for hell on earth.

Head health

The base hit points of the Husk's head is 200; its total health on normal with one player, and for every additional player 10 hit points is added. This figure is then multiplied by 0.5 on beginner, 1 on normal, 1.35 on hard, 1.55 for suicidal, and 1.75 for hell on earth.
